Color help

Choose colors on your own walls

A chip in a store looks different in your hall. We test on the wall, in your light.

At the walk-through, bring any chips, fabric or a photo. Lindsay brings a fan deck and paints test patches in two or three places.

  • Patches in morning and evening light

  • Next to your floor, trim and furniture

  • Look again the next day before you decide

Good to know

Four things about color

  • How many colors

Most houses need two or three: one for walls, one for trim and one accent. More is possible; each adds a cut line.

  • Light changes it

North light cools a color; south light warms it. Test where you will see it.

  • Sheen changes it

A glossy finish looks deeper than a flat one of the same color.

  • Dark over light

Deep colors may take an extra coat and primer. The estimate says so.
